LAKE ALLATOONA — An 18-year-old man drowned in Lake Allatoona shortly after graduating high school Saturday, authorities said.

The body of Chance Werner, of Cartersville, was recovered early Sunday morning by authorities with the Department of Natural Resources and members of the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and Fire and Rescue Department, said Melissa Cummings, a spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources.

According to witnesses, Werner and friends were playing a game involving pushing a shopping cart tied to a pole into the water. The game involved a person who would sit in a shopping cart, which was forcefully pushed off the dock, with the intended effect of causing the person to “pop” out of the cart and swim to the dock, a witness said.

However, the cart was tied to Werner and not a pole, officials said, and the cart pulled Werner into the water. The cart was still tied to Werner when his body was recovered, Cummings said.

Cummings said the investigation will be continued by Bartow County officials and the DNR will not be involved further because the recovery occurred “on land.”

Seventeen people have drowned in Lake Allatoona in the past five years, and Werner marks the first drowning case at Lake Allatoona this year, Cummings said.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic are lofty and worthy goals, but around these parts, perhaps our public skools could refocus, teaching skills for staying alive?

Lesson #2- Learn to swim

Lesson #3- Avoid cars whenever possible, but whenever it's impossible to avoid a car, wear the seat belt and be sober

Lesson #4- Don't allow your "friends" to tie you to an anchor and then throw the anchor into a lake.

Lesson #5- Whenever allowing your "friends" to tie you to an anchor and then throw the anchor into a lake, make sure you are wearing your diving knife and that you have practiced using it for cutting through rope underwater

We can't talk about what Lesson #1 is for staying alive here in Georgia, but let's say Michael Jackson tried his hardest to do it, and it wasn't drugs or little boys
