Prep Roundup: NCC rolls into region semifinals

North Cobb Christian used a late first-half run to open up the lead, and then kept momentum going in the second as it rolled over host Darlington 70-40 Friday in the Region 6A quarterfinals.

The Eagles advanced to today’s region semifinals where it will face the winner of Friday’s game Whitefield Academy and Excel Christian.

North Cobb Christian (19-6) led 19-2 late in the first quarter, but the Tigers closed the gap to 21-20 in the second before the Eagles closed the half on a 12-6 run.

Trey Kalina led the way with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Stephon Jelks had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Kendall Crute finished with 15 points, four assists and four steals, and Keyshawn Butts added five points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Boys Soccer

Pope 6, Pickens 0: Pope won its season opener behind two goals each from Matthew Laferle and Luke Scanlan.

Laferle scored the first two goals of the game to put the Greyhounds ahead 2-0 at the half.

Ian Buskirk and Jordan Leiberbaum scored one goal each.

Pope (1-0) will host Heritage-Catoosa today.
