Lassiter completed a spotless run through the Region 5AAAAAA tournament with a 3-0 win over Cherokee, bringing the Lady Trojans their third region title in five years.

The Lady Trojans (25-5), who last won their region in 2011, got all three of their runs in the first inning and held on from there.

Piper Wagner (15-3) pitched the shutout, relying on the help of her defense. She only struck out two, scattering five hits that her fielders were able to prevent from scoring.

Elise Sandberg went 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in a pair of runs, while Emily Syvarth also had a hit and an RBI.

Kelly Sinclair was 2-for-4, Catherine Pizza had a double and Carli Kayler also had a hit.

Looking for a second-straight trip to Columbus as one of the final eight teams, Lassiter will first begin postseason play with a best-of-three series against the No. 4 seed of the largely Gwinnett County-based Region 7AAAAAA.

Pope 9, Cambridge 0 (5 inn.): Kelly Barnhill pitched a perfect game and struck out 11 as the Lady Greyhounds rolled over the Lady Bears to earn the No. 3 seed from Region 7AAAAA for the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Pope (24-8) will travel to South Paulding on Wednesday.

Barnhill’s perfect game was the third of her career, and she got plenty of offensive help to aid her cause.

Tamaya Turner had the key two-run single in a six-run second inning that broke the game open.

Megan Metzinger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ellie Viland was

2-for-2 with a run batted in and Lauren Palace added two hits.
