With their retiring coach looking on, the Trojans held on by the slimmest of margins to beat Centennial 37-36.
The win was clinched at 182 pounds, where Lassiter’s Connor Shields scored a pin. The Trojans then lost two of the final three weight classes, but Shields’ pin provided Lassiter with enough of a margin to prevail at the end.
Paul Pelletier (120) and Zac Daly (138) also had pins for the Trojans. Marc Bramlett (170) won by decision, A.J. Pelletier (126) by major decision, and Winston Troughton (106) and Andrew Powell (220) each won by forfeit.
With the Region 5AAAAAA traditional championships set for next week, Lassiter’s wrestlers will tune up in a 32-team tournament Friday and Saturday at Pickens.
Pope 63, Cambridge 13: The Greyhounds improved to 33-3 in dual matches after downing their Region 7AAAAA foe on senior night at the Hound Pound.
Nine wrestlers earned pins, including Josh Tazzetta (106 pounds), Tyler Haskin (126), T.J. Collins (132), Colton Lombardy (145), Billy Meek (160), Brooks Climmons (182), Trevor Stevens (195), Joey Tabachino (220) and Taylor Howard (285).
Preston Markwell (120) and Jake Henson (152) were also victorious for the Greyhounds.
Pope will host Archer on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a battle between the state duals champions of Classes AAAAA and AAAAAA, respectively.
McEachern 45, Etowah 30: The Indians trailed 27-12 early in the non-region home match, but they went on to win eight of the final nine matches to post the victory.
Zach Murphy scored a pin at 132 pounds, as did Ashton Waites (145), Tyri Brown (170), Daquan Vareen (182), Uche Nkadi (220) and Sharrod Pittman (285). Kyle Munn won at 138 pounds.
McEachern is off until the Region 4AAAAAA traditional championship Feb. 2 at North Cobb.
Kell splits tri-match: The Longhorns beat Whitefield Academy 60-3, but they fell to Lambert 61-15.
Kerry Louis earned pins in both of his matches at 145 pounds. Calvin Irby and David Hall were also a two-time winners at 160 and 285, respectively.
Matthew Springfield (113), Javier Franco-Gomez (120), Johnny Allen (126), Brian Link (132), Devin Baker (170) and Noah Patton (195) all had wins against Whitefield.
Kell will travel to Creekview for the Region 7AAAAA traditional tournament Feb. 1-2.
