A Smyrna man has been arrested and accused of abusing a 2-month-old baby.

Police say Mario Alberto Padron left the child on the edge of a bed elevated 33 inches while he went to a nearby closet to get a baby wipe. The infant fell off the bed and hurt his leg, according to an arrest warrant.

Police say Padron also failed to tell the child’s mother and the medical staff at Cobb General Hospital the child had fallen from the bed and didn’t seek treatment until the following day.

According to the warrant, Doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta found the baby had a broken leg and three additional bone injuries to the same leg in different stages of healing.

“The additional injuries are highly specific for non-accidental trauma and are suspected as abuse,” the warrant stated.

Padron is charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and contributing to the deprivation of a minor, along with felony cruelty to children.

Padron remains in jail without bond, and he is on hold for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, according to jail booking information.
