CUMBERLAND — The bloody string of violence leading up to the new year continued in Cobb County on Friday, as police reported a confrontation with an armed man at a local hotel that ended in the man’s death.

A Cobb County Police officer shot and killed a man at a hotel at 2239 Powers Ferry Road, southeast of Marietta, after police said he drew a handgun during an altercation.

Officers responded at about 10:15 a.m. to a report of a stolen motorcycle that was parked in the parking lot of the Extended Stay America Hotel on Powers Ferry at Interstate 285 in the Cumberland area. During their investigation, officers confronted a suspect in room 345 of the hotel.

A physical altercation ensued and the suspect, later identified as John Alan Massey, 30, of Marietta, reportedly drew a handgun. This “immediately caused the officers to be in fear for their lives,” according to a brief statement issued by Cobb Police Department at 7:42 p.m. Friday.

“An officer on scene, acting in self defense, was forced to fire his service weapon, striking the perpetrator,” according to the release.

Massey died at the scene.

The officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave and the department’s statement said the officers would not be identified Friday. The incident is being investigated by the department’s internal-affairs unit as well as the crimes against persons unit.

The hotel on Powers Ferry rents “by the day, week or month” with fully equipped kitchens, according to its website. The rate advertised for a one-night stay Friday was “starting at $61.99 per night,” according to the website.

Friday’s incident was the latest in a rash of shootings that have left seven people dead in Cobb since Dec. 17.

Some of the recent slayings remain unsolved, including that of 86-year-old Juanita Calvert, a nearly blind woman who was found dead in her Aviation Road home by a caregiver Dec. 17. Marietta Police have reported no suspects.

In another case, 43-year-old Sherrie Newton was found dead by her husband in their east Cobb home on Post Oak Tritt Road on Dec. 18. Cobb Police said she was shot to death by Bryan Bunch, 26, who then took his own life.

On Sunday, Dec. 22, a double murder suicide took place at Ivy Ridge Apartments just outside of Marietta off Delk Road.
