Police say the driver of an SUV they were searching for after a fatal hit-and-run Sunday night has contacted them and is cooperating with the investigation.

“He is no longer a person of interest, but the investigation is ongoing and it’s going to take us a few days to probably go through all the evidence and either clear him or charge him,” said Officer David Baldwin with Marietta Police Department.

“It’s still undetermined if he had any role in this at all,” he said. “We were just looking for him because his car matched the description of the vehicle at the scene during the accident.”

Police received calls about 7:45 p.m. Sunday that a bicyclist was hit at the intersection of Powder Springs Street and Natchez Trace.

The 55-year-old man, who has not been identified because police are having difficulty notifying family, was riding his bicycle southbound on Powder Springs Street near Natchez Trace when he was struck by what witnesses described as a black Cadillac Escalade or similar type luxury SUV exiting the parking lot of NCG Cinemas. The SUV in question was caught on a video camera at the cinema.

The bicyclist was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta where he died from injuries. Baldwin did not know the details of the injuries.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Officer Scott Davis at (770) 794-5364.
