Now, several Republican-backed bills specific to Fulton County have crossed or are nearing the finish line this legislative session, over objections from some Democrats.
One bill would double the homestead property tax exemption. Another would redraw more Republican-friendly district lines of the local county offices. One would let Republican Gov. Nathan Deal appoint the county’s next chief magistrate judge. And there are others.
Republicans say the measures will improve Fulton governments. Senate Democrats on Tuesday said it’s all a power play. Atlanta Sen. Vincent Fort joked to his colleagues that the legislature should be renamed the Fulton County Commission.
