CUMBERLAND — Cobb Police have made no arrests in two armed robbery cases that occurred early Sunday morning just outside the Atlanta perimeter near Cumberland Mall.

At 4:12 a.m. Sunday, a black man entered the Texaco gas station, off Powers Ferry Road, according to Officer Mike Bowman of Cobb Police.

Bowman said the man pulled a handgun and demanded an employee open the cash register. The man then took an undisclosed amount of cash.

As the suspect fled, he fired one round into the ceiling of the gas station, Bowman said. No injuries were reported.

On Monday morning, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb Police said it was not clear why the suspect fired a shot. He advised victims of these types of commercial robberies not to escalate a property crime to a crime against a person.

“Give them what they want and hopefully they will go peacefully without an injury to an employee or a customer,” Pierce said. If the store clerk remains calm, the suspect will “leave the area as quickly as possible.”

On Sunday afternoon, Bowman said police officers at the Texaco scene believed they spotted two people connected to the robbery.

One suspect left the scene in a vehicle and has not been found by police. The other suspect tried to flee on foot but was capture by Cobb Police.

On Monday, Pierce said it was determined the apprehended suspect was not linked to the robbery, but could face other charges in connection to unrelated crimes, which do not include robberies.

A second robbery moments later

Half an hour after the Texaco incident, another gas station was robbed off Windy Hill Road, about a mile north of the future Atlanta Braves stadium site.

At 4:45 a.m., a black man allegedly entered the Sams Mart of a Shell gas station, drew a handgun and demanded cash from the register.

Bowman said the man took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot.

The two robberies are unrelated, according to Pierce. He said Cobb Police would likely be using surveillance footage in the investigation, but by Monday afternoon had not reviewed any images from Sunday morning.

Cobb Police are asking anyone with information about these incidents to call (770) 499-3945.

Both robberies were committed in precinct Zone 3, which is near the Cumberland area where Interstates 75 and 285 cross outside of the perimeter.
