The second of three Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets coming to Cobb County will open Friday at 3372 Canton Road, in Blackwell Square Plaza shopping center.

The store is located at the corner of Canton and Blackwell roads in the former America’s Thrift Store, which relocated across the street.

According to store manager Derrick Lawman, 90 new jobs have been filled. At 42,000 square feet, the store is one-fourth the size of a regular Wal-Mart Supercenter, and it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We will provide value and convenience,” said Lawman. “My goal is to intertwine with the community as much as possible to let them know we are here and we want to be good neighbors.”

Though a scaled-down model, the store will include fresh produce, bakery, self-serve deli, prepared meal take-out, health and beauty, digital photo processing center and a pharmacy. The pharmacy will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lawman said the store will also have an Asian and Hispanic specialty foods section, as well as a gluten-free section.

“We tailor as much as possible to the community,” he said. “We also want to provide as much organic product as possible.”

Cobb County District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, who represents the area, said the Canton Road business community is excited about the redevelopment and job creation.

“The Canton Road Redevelopment Foundation is working to spur investment along the Canton Road corridor,” she said. “As other businesses see Wal-Mart thrive in this neighborhood, I hope it encourages those businesses to see Canton Road as a location to build and expand.”

Following a ribbon-cutting at 7 a.m. with Cobb Chamber of Commerce representatives, the store will open to the public. According to Lawman, Pepsi, Tasty Cakes, Oreo and other vendors will provide product samples and have mascots on site during opening day and throughout the weekend. Additionally, $4,000 in grants will be presented from Wal-Mart and the Wal-Mart Foundation to local community groups.

The first neighborhood market store in Cobb opened in January at 1167 Powder Springs Street near Bellemeade Drive, in the former Food Depot site.

The third store will be located in east Cobb at the intersection of Roswell Road and Old Canton Road in the Old Mill Shopping Center. At 48,000 square feet, it will be the largest of the three. According to Bill Wertz, divisional director east of community and media relations for Wal-Mart, the market is expected to open late in 2013.

Wertz said last year that in all three locations, Wal-Mart is leasing the space. He added that because of the abundance of buildings in the 40,000-square-foot size range, retrofits are often done for the neighborhood markets in lieu of new construction.
