The Mount Paran Christian girls won the Class A private school state sectional Monday at Goshen Plantation Golf Club in Augusta with 184 strokes, beating second place Galloway by four.

Holly Cannon shot an 87 to lead Mount Paran. McKenna Cua carded a 97 after shooting over 50 on the front nine.

Mount Paran will advance to the Class A private school tournament, which will be played May 20 at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah.

“Their goal is to get to state and that’s what they did,” Mount Paran coach Scott Varner said. “This is the fourth straight year of making the state tournament and now we’re going to see what we can do against some of the best.”

The Walker boys came up just short in qualifying for boys private school tournament at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, even though Joe Reich and Johnny Hsu both shot 75 to qualify for the Class A private school state tournament as individuals.

The Wolverines placed fifth when they needed to place fourth to qualify as a team.

The Whitefield girls also came up short, finishing sixth, but Madison Barnett has qualified individually for the second time with an 87.

The Kell boys will continue playing on after finishing fifth with team total of 319 at the Class AAAAA sectional held at Westlake Country Club in Augusta.

Matthew Hines finished his round with a 30-foot birdie putt to shoot 73, good enough for fourth overall.

Mark Decoster, Corey Sellers and Chandler Mackey each shot 82.

“This is our third year in a row,” Kell coach Craig Hines said. “We bounced back after having a terrible region (tournament) and to shoot 319 on this course was a great team effort.”

The Class AAAAAA boys sectional at Brookfield Country Club, where Lassiter and Kennesaw Mountain are vying for a spot, has been postponed to May 13 because of rain.

Lassiter coach Butch Burden said four of the holes at Brookfield are under water.

The Walton girls are scheduled to play in the AAAAAA sectionals today at the Country Club of Roswell.
