Polls show a virtual tie between Mitt Romney and President Obama despite all the bad news about the economy, a situation that normally would have the incumbent on the ropes in public opinion.

The Rasmussen tracking poll Thursday had Romney with 47 percent to Obama’s 46 percent, while Gallup’s seven-day rolling average showed Obama with 47 percent and Romney with 45 percent. And 47 percent of those surveyed by Gallup disapproved of Obama’s performance, versus 46 percent approval.

Moreover, a recent poll showed 50 percent of likely voters said they trust Romney more on the economy and taxes, compared to only 42 percent giving the president the edge in trustworthiness on those key issues. So why is Obama able to hang in there with backing from nearly half the voters in the face of this rotten economy which by some accounts is about to get worse?

The answer lies in how voters in these polls look at Romney — the result in no small measure of the attacks by the Obama camp going right at the heart of Romney’s strength, his business experience. Get this: a new Rasmussen survey shows that 41 percent of likely voters think Romney’s record as a businessman is a reason to vote against him — matching the 41 percent that say it’s primarily a reason to vote for him. The battle is being fought for the 18 percent, nearly one-fifth of those polled, who say they are not sure if Romney’s business experience is a plus or minus.

On the issue du jour of demands that Romney release more than two years of tax returns, there are mixed signals. In a USA Today/Gallup Poll, 54 percent said Romney should release more returns, while only 37 percent disagreed. However, the very same poll showed 47 percent of those surveyed said releasing tax returns is “largely irrelevant” to choosing a candidate, but 44 percent said the returns provide “legitimate information that helps voters make better decisions.”

The inconsistency is connected to the candidate. It’s one thing to say tax returns are irrelevant as a general rule, but when it comes to a real candidate, things change — because of the political viewpoints, plain and simple: a whopping 75 percent of the Democrats polled said Romney should release more tax returns as did 53 percent of independents, but only 30 percent of Republicans agreed. If the situation were reversed, one might reasonably assume that most Republicans would be calling for Obama to release more returns and most Democrats would disagree.

It seems many voters in these polls separate Obama from the issues. Per the poll results previously cited, if 50 percent of likely voters trust Romney more on the economy and taxes, then why in the name of common sense don’t they plan to vote for him? The same question arises concerning Rasmussen’s finding that 66 percent of the people surveyed believe the government has too much power, and most voters continue to favor repeal of Obamacare.

Bottom line: trouble for Obama.

Where are the jobs Mr President Obama? A tax return never generated a single job. 8.2% unemployment stands as a monument to four years of Obama failed policies.

I don't think for a moment Romney needs to release any more returns than required. This president has an enemies list and has gone after republican donors and slandered them for no good reason. In fact, the IRS and labor department have gone after one of the donors. Why should Romney put himself in any situation where Obama can add more false attacks against him. Obama disqualified his senate opponent in Illinois by opening up sealed divorce records to use against him. Romney needs to make Obama run on his record and that is precisely what he is doing.

Obama is in trouble? Well that's a predictable assessment coming from Marietta, GA. But in the real world north and west of the Mason-Dixon line, Obama will win for the same, simple reason that Bill Clinton and George W. won reelection. Obama, like Bill and Dubya, is approachable and likable. Romney--not so much. In fact, he's not at all. Romney is a Republican version of John Kerry.

Perhaps Mr Romney should run for President of the foreign countries where much of his money shields itself from paying taxes like the rest of us who work hard and pay our taxes without a fleet of tax attorneys and accountants to help us elude taxes -- countries like the Cayman Islands, Switzerland, Bermuda.

Just what is Romney hiding and why is he so afraid to share with voters his myriad financial dealings?

This Romney guy makes GHW Bush's "silver spoon" look old and tarnished by comparison.

@anonymous

Sure, just as soon as Obama shows us his REAL birth certificate, explains his multiple social security numbers, releases his college records, releases his medical records, releases his fund raising records of his Illinois senate campaign funding scandal, releases his foreign student scholarship records, etc. Oh and here is a news flash for you, the 8.2% of unemployed Americans could give a twit about tax records. What they want to see is the jobs that hopium and change Obama promised them. Where are the jobs?

It is no secret that the inside chatter at Rasmussen and Gallup is that people being polled are not answering truthfully, for many reasons. Thus, poll results are all over the map. What is clear is the desperate Democrat strategy of an issue du jour. Obama has no positive record to run on, only a negative dismal economic record and a health care law that remains unpopular with 75% of Americans. Thus, the Democrats continue to throw everything at the wall and see if anything sticks. Basically, they are doing anything to distract voters from Obama's dismal economic record. 8.2% unemployment does not even include millions of Americans who have given up looking for work. Democrats are taking a huge risk in pandering to their fractured base. They are not only alienating many in their base, but they are completely turning off average swing voter Americans. Blacks are Obama's most reliable base, and yet, many blacks are alienated by Obama's stand on gays and abortion. If 15% of blacks stay home, or worse yet, vote Romney, it will spell a complete disaster for Obama. Democrats are getting desperate, so look for even more ridiculous absurd issues du jour thrown at Romney, all of which can only hurt Obama and help Romney.

Maybe Romney should make releasing more of his tax returns conditional on obama releasing his school records, passport records, selective service registration, social security numbers (and he has several) birth certificate (the real one not the forged one), and all of the other records he has spent millions trying to keep secret. So Romney releases more - what is it going to prove - that he is wealthy- everyone already knows this - it is a pure and simple distration beacause these Chicago politicians know the American people are like sheep and will accept whatever the loudest people proclaim adn whatever the national media spouts.

The clowns that believe that Obama has the answers to the economy are as ignorant as he is as to where the money comes from to pay for all the largess that is handed out. It comes from taxing the profits of the businesses and incomes and profits of the citizens. No profits..No Taxes..No Welfare Checks. Think they will ever figure it out? Doubt it!

You have it absolutely right. And if Romney released 5 more years of tax returns, they will then want 10 years, just to keep things stirred up and off the record of failure by this president. Of course, obama has 50% of the voters supporting him - I am sure this is the 50% that are living off the rest of us working stiffs through their welfare, food cards, rent subsidies, medicaid, free lunches all around, and on and on. When you get almost 50% of the total population dependent on the government the idea of free and fair elections is gone. Are they going to vote for a person/party who believes they should go to work and not be a drain on those who do work? No, of course not, hence the reason for the big push on putting more on food stamps, extending unemployment benefits to an unheard of level, etc. And don't tell me about social security and medicare being included - those getting these benefits paid for them - and many are still paying for them - all of their working lives. It is NOT a freebie from the good heart of the government like all of this other junk is, which was originally set up as a temporary safety net, not as a way of life for generations.
