A Marietta man remains in jail after he was accused of trying to evade police and narrowly missed running over an officer with his car.

Stephon C. Cornell was arrested April 13 and charged with felony aggravated assault on an officer when he drove away from a home in the 3000 block of Ashgrove Lane in Marietta.

According to an arrest warrant, Cobb County police responded to a report of a man refusing to leave a residence and being held at gunpoint by a female victim. When he finally left, he met police on the way out and allegedly tried to mislead them that someone else was inside the house being held at gunpoint.

When officers told him to stop, he allegedly accelerated his car, causing one of the officers to step out of the way. It was only when a passenger took the car out of gear that it came to a stop.

Cornell is being held without bond in Cobb County Jail. In addition to aggravated assault, he is charged with misdemeanor attempting to elude, driving without a license, obstruction, criminal trespass remain, simple assault fear and disorderly conduct.
