Fleishel, who grew up in Woodstock before she graduated in 2007 from Kennesaw State University, won second place out of more than 46,000 entries nationwide. The shopping bag featuring Fleishel's design will be available in select Kroger stores starting in April as part of Kroger's Earth Day commemoration.
Fleishel, a weekly Kroger shopper, used a variety of colors in her text-based design. She said it took her only an hour to come up with the design.
"You can make some really nice designs with text, so basically I made a list of some words I thought would define an eco-bag and Kroger trying to promote helping the environment," said Felishel, 25. "I arranged them in different colors and sizes until I had a shape made out of texts. Then I put a woman holding up what looks like a world on part of the graphic."
The winner of the contest, who was from Columbus, Ohio, was awarded a $1,000 Kroger gift card. Fleishel and three other top four finalists each received a $250 Kroger gift card. The remaining five runner-ups were awarded a $100 Kroger gift card.
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Kroger is one of the nation's largest grocery chains. Kroger's Atlanta division has more than 216 stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
The contest asked customers to submit their environmentally inspired designs for Kroger's reusable grocery bags on Kroger.com. More than 11,600 people voted to determine the contest finalists, according to Kroger. The contest was open only to U.S. residents 13 years old or older.
"We aren't the least bit surprised to have a finalist from Marietta. We have a wide range of very talented, creative customers in metro Atlanta," stated Glynn Jenkins, Kroger's Atlanta division spokesperson.
"The average family uses an estimated 400 plastic bags every year. Each Kroger reusable bag could eliminate as many as 1,000 plastic bags throughout its lifetime, so Kroger knows the importance of doing its part to be an eco-friendly retailer."
