Late Jay Whorton ‘was a giver’

It was with sadness that I read about the loss of MDJ Associate Publisher Jay Whorton. This is probably the first time I have said his name in 40 years and not smiled.

Jay Whorton was truly one of a kind — he loved Miss Laura, his sons, family in general, Otis Brumby and the MDJ, Cobb County, his friends and those who just hadn’t yet become his friends.

Yes, he was a salesman, but he was first a giver — if he could not give you what you wanted out of doing business with him and the MDJ, he would work his hardest to make the deal as beneficial to you as it was to him.

I adored getting his phone calls — they put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

I had the pleasure of having business lunches with him throughout the years, and would laugh as he paid attention to me — and, I could tell, to everyone else in the room.

I miss him already.
