MARIETTA - The Trojans continued doing what they do best.
Lassiter's offense wasted no time jumping on Alpharetta on Friday night, scoring two touchdowns on its first five plays Friday night. Hutson Mason completed 75 percent of his passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns, helping his team generate 412 yards of offense en route to a 44-7 drubbing over the Raiders at Frank Fillmann Stadium.
Lassiter is one of three Region 6AAAAA teams who are undefeated with 6-0 overall records, 5-0 in the region. Walton defeated Milton 28-23 and Roswell thumped Wheeler, 25-7, to stay perfect.
"Getting off to a quick start definitely, definitely helped us out, and it made it to where we could put a little pressure on them, get some confidence and all that kind of stuff," Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said. "It was a good start, and our guys did a good job preparing this week."
The Trojans put the pressure on Alpharetta (2-4, 1-4) as early as the second play when Mason hit Tyrin Jones on a post pattern for a 68-yard touchdown.
To make matters worse for Alpharetta, Coray Carlson picked off a Justin Burns pass attempt on the second play of the ensuing drive, and it took three plays for Mason to find Trey Graham for a 15-yard touchdown.
"Shoot, coming out to a quick start is what we needed," Mason said. "Against this good Alpharetta team, we needed a momentum burst and that's what we got, and it set the tempo for the rest of the night."
The Raiders didn't cave in after falling behind two scores early. Their defense held Lassiter on its next two drives, and Burns orchestrated a 13-play touchdown drive that chewed nearly 5 minutes of clock. Their drive ended 3 minutes into the second quarter on a 3-yard slant pass to James Mincey.
A one-touchdown deficit was as close Alpharetta would ever get to Lassiter.
The Trojans gave themselves a little insurance when they orchestrated a long touchdown drive of their own that culminated in a one-yard plunge by Rip Rowen. Then Lassiter struck again late in the first half on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Mason to Graham.
The game was decided on the first play of the second half.
As Burns was attempting a pass on first down, Rowen approached him from behind and stripped it. The ball fell into the hands of Marcus Stokes, who returned it 32-yards for a touchdown.
Lassiter capped the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Mason to Griffin Roelle midway through the fourth to turn on the running clock. Roelle led with 98 yards receiving on seven catches.
