Ledford stepped up in the third set of Friday’s match against Kell, as did freshman Libby Bochniak, and helped Lassiter rebound from a sluggish second set to win 25-12, 18-25, 15-12 in pool play of the Sequoyah Classic at River Ridge High School.
Ledford and Bochniak combined for 11 kills in the final set to help the Lady Trojans (2-0) get the early lead. Ledford finished the match with 16 kills and four aces, while Bochniak added eight kills, including six in the decisive third set.
“The third set came down to who can make a few more plays,” Lassiter coach Greg Hodge said.
With the third set even at 11-all after Lassiter surrendered a four-point lead, Ledford’s kill on the first pass gave the Lady Trojans a lead they held for good.
Bochniak followed with a kill to make it 13-11, and Ledford capped a long rally that involved strong defense by both teams with a smash to give Lassiter its first match points.
Kell saved the first match point against Lassiter’s serve before hitting a service error to end the match.
“Becca did come through in the end,” Hodge said. “She got a couple of balls down and developed a variety of shots to do it. And Libby is a stud. I’m pleased with her progress and flexibility. I want somebody to put the ball down, and she’s doing it.”
In its previous pool-play match, Lassiter beat Lambert in straight sets by serving eight aces — five from Caylee Yanes — and its aggressive serving carried over into the first set of its match against Kell. The Lady Trojans hit five aces in the first set alone and forced Kell to make three errors on serve receive.
The Lady Trojans got back-to-back aces from Ledford to take a 14-4 lead, and Kell never got within eight points the rest of the way.
But after Lassiter jumped to a 7-2 lead in the second set, the Lady Longhorns made adjustments. They began to serve aggressively as well, taking Lassiter out of sync.
With Kell clinging to a 13-12 lead, Bridie Stein served 10 straight points, with five coming off Lassiter errors. Stein served two aces during the run, and Brittany Stocus helped out with two kills.
Micah Ensor, Lassiter’s other contributing freshman, added six kills. Junior setter Sam Link finished with 30 assists.
For Kell, Ashley Jones led with eight kills and had 1½ blocks. Julie Edwards added five kills, and Joanna Tiller finished with 16 assists.
