MARIETTA — Lassiter made it look easy Friday, beating Habersham Central 8-0 in five innings in the decisive third game of their first-round Class AAAAAA state playoff series.

Junior Brianna Michaud struck out seven and threw the first perfect game of her high school career. The final out ricocheted off the glove of third baseman Andrea Summey and into the mitt of shortstop Kelly Sinclair, who then threw to Amanda Wilson to get Habersham’s Brittany Parham out at first.

“It wasn’t my first perfect game, but it’s always exciting to throw one,” Michaud said. “Everything was working (Friday).”

Lassiter advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where it will host defending state champion Archer in a best-of-three series, beginning Wednesday.

“This game wasn’t easy,” Lassiter coach Jason Campbell said. “That’s a good, quality team out of one of the best regions in the state. They came out in the first game and put it to us, but we rebounded in the second game.

“Then (on Friday), Brianna threw one of the best pitching performances I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve been waiting for that kind of performance all year, and it was great to see her come through in a big game like that.”

Lassiter scored once in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third. But it blew the game open with a four-run fourth to post the 8-0 lead.

Lassiter totaled eight hits and left only three runners on base. Habersham Central committed five errors.

Sinclair reached base in the first off a leadoff error and scored on Carli Kayler’s double.

Piper Wagner singled to lead off the second and was replaced by pinch-runner Abbi Ferrier. An error during Michaud’s at-bat allowed Ferrier to score. Sally Swan, the courtesy runner for Michaud, who reached third on the error, scored off Becca Sailors’ illegal pitch for the 3-0 margin.

Kayler’s leadoff home run in the third put Lassiter in front 4-0.

The Lady Trojans scored their final four runs with two outs in the fourth. Summey singled, stole second and scored on Sinclair’s double. Murphy Davis singled home Sinclair and Kayler reached on an error, leaving Davis at second.

Elise Sandberg’s single down the first-base line plated Davis, and an error at home allowed Kayler to score from third for the 8-0 advantage.

Sinclair batted 2-for-3 with two doubles and a, RBI, while Kayler was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs.

“I wasn’t nervous at all (to pitch Game 3), just confident going in,” Michaud said. “This is a good group of girls, and we have good coaches, and I think we can go far in the tournament. It feels good to advance.”
