Kennesaw Mountain High band wins first at national competition

Kennesaw Mountain High School's marching band won first place in the Class AAA national competition at the Music for All's Bands of America competition in Indianapolis, Ind., this weekend.

Kennesaw Mountain and Walton high schools were two of nearly 90 bands that competed Nov. 7-10 for the 2012 competition.

Kennesaw Mountain placed first and also received honors for "Outstanding Music Performance," "Outstanding Visual Performance" and "Outstanding General Effect."

Walton was named a semi-finalist in the competition.

Those awards were given to the band after their semi-finals performance. They won for their class, which has not been done since 2004. Regardless of the overall placement, they should be extremely proud of all of their hard work.

Also, this is a Championship of bands that chose to enter. No competitive process to enter this show.

Also, to be clear... While this is a national competition, there is not contest to enter. Any band would be free to enter, so not every good/great band in the country was in this competition. So the crown of "National Champ" is subjective.

True, it is not a true national championship because the best bands don't go year in and year out. However, most years the band that finishes 1st in this one is almost always one of the tops in the nation. Very rarely can an argument be made that the winner at grand nats is not the best in the nation (at least on that night according that panel of judges).

I was part of Lassiter in 2002 when we won the Natl. championship. The cost involved for bands from Texas/here/Florida/etc to go every year are restrictive.

Never going to get anything closer to a national championship.

Congrats, but misleading. KM was 7th in overall competition and that is the way the competition works. They won their class but 7th overall.

They won their class, congrats to Kennesaw Mtn. Those top 4/5 bands were just on a whole different level than everyone else this past weekend.

Congrats to Walton too for finishing in the top 20 (I believe).

Way to represent the excellence that is fine arts and the band programs in the county.
