FORT MYERS, Fla. — Kennesaw State defeated Lipscomb 7-1 to claim its first Atlantic Sun Conference tournament title. The win earns the Owls an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament which starts next weekend.

With the game tied 1-1 heading to the seventh inning, back to back singles by Max Pentecost and Bo Way started the deciding rally. Brennan Morgan followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield to bring home Pentecost and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Way would race home on a wild pitch when Lipscomb was attempting to intentionally walk Matt Bahnick. Two pitches later, Bahnick ripped an RBI single to left to score Morgan and give the Owls a 4-1 lead.

Morgan would go on to be named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after going 9-for-14 with 7 RBIs.

“It’s a great feeling,” Owls coach Mike Sansing said. “Our guys played well throughout the last six weeks. This tournament was just another stride in that. We’re excited. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Kennesaw State will find out which NCAA Regional it will compete in today. The selection show can be seen on ESPNU at Noon.

The majority of the game was a pitching duel thanks to Jordan Hillyer, who got the start on short rest. He gave the Owls six strong innings allowing one run and five hits.

“Hillyer comes back on short rest and throws great,” Sansing said. “He kept them to the one run. It was a huge effort by him to keep us right there.”

Chris McGowan added a three-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to push the Owls lead to 7-1.

Morgan, Bahnick, Pentecost, and Way were selected to the 2014 A-Sun All-Tournament Team for their outstanding performances in the tournament.

The pile on is nothing short of asinine. Does someone have to break an arm or leg for this nonsense to stop?
