Lee said the county’s legal department received a call from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement asking that the meeting be canceled an hour before it was set to begin.
The agent did not give a reason for the cancellation, Lee said.
“They just said they weren’t going to be there,” he said.
Lee said he asked that the meeting be rescheduled, and at the very least that the agent attend the next commission meeting, but as of Wednesday evening he had not heard back from the agent.
On Tuesday, commissioner Bob Ott called for Lee to hold the meeting in public so that everyone could be educated on what the ICE agent had to say. Lee said the reason for the meeting was so he and Goreham could learn more about the proposal Ott and Commissioner JoAnn Birrell have made to require county contractors to apply for certification with the federal IMAGE program.
Lee said Ott can say what he likes.
“How many meetings has he had where it wasn’t open to talk to people about this?” Lee said. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If he opens up all his meetings, I’ll open up all of mine.”
Lee said he wanted the meeting to be closed so those in attendance could ask whatever questions they wanted.
“Sometimes if you want to get to the truth, you’ve got to have a conversation where people can be a little more relaxed and unguarded about what they’re saying because it won’t be printed in the paper the next day,” he said.

The 2nd & 4th Monday, every month, the mayor, council, department heads, sometimes police chief & city administrator meet upstairs,.. behind a LOCKED door. This is where ALL discussions & decisions are made.
Oh sure, the public is invited,.. IF you know where to go. You must first walk into an empty looking building, walk up the stairs, ring a door bell, wait to be allowed in. The room is wired w/ a closed circuit TV & the occupants of the room can see who is ringing the door bell.
Creepy & DISHONEST!
And that's just the tip of the lack of transparency iceberg in Smyrna.
One day people will understand the meaning of ABSOLUTE POWER! The mayor has been in power for 26 or 27 years. He thinks he's king.
Lee is taking lessons from Bacon.
To my knowledge all city and county elected officials discuss and debate the issues they will eventually vote on in the official public meetings they have.
It not for secrecy or to avoid transparency. It is an attempt to have an expedient and organized discussion of the issues they have to make decisions on.
Get a grip MK.
We need Leaders that can get to the Truth in the Public eye, not behind closed doors. An Honest person is not concerned about what comes out of their mouth, for it shall be the Truth.
"What’s good for the goose is good for the gander." is NO way to run a County of 700,000 people.
The public version (which by inference may not be true) and the private meeting which apparently is more truthful and relaxed.
