The Marietta Police Department is investigating the cause of death of a homeless man who was found Tuesday morning lying face down in Rottonwood Creek, under a Delk Road bridge.

Officer David Baldwin of Marietta Police said the Cobb County 911 center received a call at 10:30 a.m. about a body floating in the creek.

When officers arrived, they discovered the body of a man, who police have identified, but are waiting until his family is notified before releasing a name.

“That is a well-known homeless camp underneath that bridge,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin said the suspected cause of death of the homeless man was drowning, but the medical examiner will determine the official cause of death and if foul play was involved.

Georgia’s homeless population was estimated at 11,366 people, according to a September 2012 study by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

Local figures from June 2011 estimated that 410 people in Cobb were either living on the streets or in temporary shelters or hotels, according to the “Every Georgian Counts” report by Kennesaw State University.

This ranks Cobb County in the bottom 10 counties of Georgia, on the low end for estimated rates of homelessness.
