Holsey Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church will celebrate the milestone on June 9 at 3 p.m. The featured guest speaker is Pastor Leon Hollinshead from Word of Truth Christian Center in Decatur.
The celebration’s theme is “A 21st Century Church: Remembering The Past, Embracing the Present and Anticipating the Future.”
Founded in 1901, Holsey Chapel was named in honor of Bishop Lucius Henry Holsey, 1842-1920, one of the church’s founding bishops, said longtime congregant Ann Brown.
Brown, a former nurse who now works at Atherton Place, said the church moved into a property on Montgomery Street in 1940 where it worshipped for 36 years before the Marietta Urban Renewal Program helped members find its newest home at 416 Cole St. near Allgood Elementary School in 1976.
The Marietta resident of about 50 years said she loves being part of a tight-knit group.
“I love it because it’s a small congregation,” said Brown, who has attended the church for 40 years. “We have dedicated members in keeping the church going and encouraging younger people to keep the church going.”
The Rev. Ricky Hammond Sr. has led the family-oriented church for the last year, raising membership from about 12 to about 50 on any given Sunday.
“The church is very spirit-led,” Hammond said. “We are on fire for the Lord and for the community. We are real small but our heart is big.”
Hammond said his goal for the celebration is to honor senior members who have worked hard to keep the church alive.
“When I got here, I saw a lot of work going on and not a lot of recognition,” he said. “They haven’t gotten their just dues… This anniversary celebration gives recognition to those who went through the good times and the hard times, that have been there and stayed with the church.”
In his vision for the future, Hammond said he would like to build an addition to the church to include a kitchen.
“We can’t serve a lot of people because our sanctuary is not always conducive to that,” he said. “I’d like to build a kitchen or an addition to the church… to serve dinner and have events.”
