Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins said a lot of residents were obviously alarmed in the wake of the recent damage caused flooding, but he said no homes were flooded and no residents were displaced from the overflow of Sweetwater Creek caused by heavy rains Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

"There are a few roads that have been closed because of the waters, but I expect those to open up pretty soon," Jerkins said Wednesday afternoon.

Roads closed at certain areas included Perkerson Mill, Jones, Garrett, Westside and Stovall roads, as well as Brooks Drive. By late Wednesday, all roads had been reopened except Westside Road and Brooks Drive.

Sweetwater Creek near Austell was expected to rise 4 feet above its 10-foot flood stage throughout Wednesday night, the National Weather Service reported, and fall below flood stage early Friday morning.

Legion Park, which was inundated with water in September, again flooded.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning Wednesday for the Chattahoochee River at Paces Ferry Road and Highway 41, and near Atlanta Highway 280. The river was above flood stage at those points, but was expected to drop by this afternoon. The weather service also issued flood warnings for Sweetwater Creek, near Powder Springs, which was about 2 feet above flood stage on Wednesday in that area, and Nickajack Creek, near Mableton, which was 2 feet above the 10-foot flood stage there.

All roads that were closed because of flooding in unincorporated Cobb had reopened, or were expected to reopen, by Wednesday night, except for Hiram-Lithia Springs Road and Stout Parkway.
