When there is nowhere else to turn, there is hope. The 10 Women of HOPE provides assistance to single moms who experience an essential financial emergency.

Celebrate the gift of girlfriends on Oct. 17 at the 6th Annual Girls’ Night Out fundraiser from 5 to 8 pm. at the Brickyard at Marietta Station.

The evening features local retailers and artists and provides unique shopping opportunities and experiences, all in the spirit of raising funds for single moms who need a hand up. Silent auction, light dinner, beer, wine, soft drinks and specialty gifts promise to make this year’s event memorable and fun for all.

The 10 Women of HOPE, a nonprofit organization, offers hope to single mothers.

“These are moms who are otherwise financially stable and can normally maintain for their family, but hit a temporary road block and need help getting past it. It’s a onetime hand up, not hand out,” said Marietta resident Laurel Kovach, a member of 10 Women.

The 10 Women is unique because it responds “on the spot” to situations that need immediate attention.

“That might include a past due rent or utility payment, a car repair, a child’s medical bill. We might also help with a school function or club that a single mom can’t financially stretch far enough so that her child can participate. There are so many things that most of us don’t think about that someone on a tight budget will struggle to pay,” Kovach said.

Applications are made and screened through school social workers and social service agencies that are personally familiar with situations. The 10 Women continues to develop a resource list that includes community partnerships that donate or provide discounted services.

“(Girls Night Out) is a really fun event that gets girlfriends together to just socialize, eat, drink and shop – something we all love to do. The evening is dedicated to raising money for our deserving moms. We are a small organization and have almost no overhead expenses, so the evening is all about giving back to women. It’s about giving hope. We all need hope to look forward, and for single parents trying to stay on track, we can do something as a community to help them stay the course,” said Kovach, who works as community sales director for Atria Johnson Ferry Senior Living.

The six-year-old organization includes founder Patsy Bryan, Lamuriel Adams, Carla Brown, Patsy Bryan, Wanda Callahan, Angie Davis, Jean Hawkins, Laurel Kovach, Jackie Payne, Fran Sutton and Penny Warren.

The group has helped more than 200 moms. “It’s humbling to think that anyone who has the spirit to help others, can make such a difference just by pulling in friends who feel the same,” Kovach said.

The Brickyard is at 129 Church St., Marietta.

Tickets are available at the door or through one of the 10 Women, with a $25 minimum donation. For more information, email womenofhope@ymail.com.
