ATLANTA — The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent in October, Georgia Department of Labor officials announced Thursday.

The October rate is down from 8.3 percent in September, and has dropped from 8.8 percent in October of 2012, officials said.

Department Commissioner Mark Butler said he’s encouraged by the rate.

“We’ve seen Georgia gain almost 30,000 jobs over the last two months. And, the good thing about the job creation is that it’s pretty much through all sectors,” Butler said in a statement.

The overall number of jobs in the state rose to nearly 4.1 million in October, the largest total since November 2008, Butler said. The amount of jobs offered in the state increased by 22,700 in September.

The trade and transportation industry gained about 6,800 jobs, followed by the education and health services field, which gained 5,400 jobs. Several industries including manufacturing, construction, professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality each gained about 1,100 jobs and the financial services industry gained about 600 jobs, Butler said.

The state lost about 8,100 government jobs in 2013, Butler added.

About 40,000 Georgians filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance in October, which is up 17 percent from September, Butler said. He added that most people who filed claims worked temporary jobs in the manufacturing industry.
