Re: Georgia GOP Chair Sue Everhart’s comments on gay marriage, reported in Monday’s MDJ
Ms. Everhart warns that gay marriage would let straight people falsely claim to be gay so that they could “get all the benefits” of gay couples, leading to “so much abuse it’s unreal.”
So gay people shouldn’t have the right to marry because straight people could abuse that right? Going through such contortions of logic to deny basic civil rights would be funny if the consequences weren’t so serious.
Gay couples are forced to pay substantially higher taxes on partner health care benefits, state and federal income tax filings, inheritance taxes and more. To support a continuation of this unfair discrimination against a specific segment of the citizenry seems an odd position for the leader of a political party that constantly harps how much it opposes unfair taxes and wants the government off people’s backs.
Everhart goes on to say she also opposes the gay “lifestyle” and gay parenting.
But, the real clincher comes when Everhart says if she had a gay neighbor, she would be “just as friendly to them” as if they were straight. Some friend!
