Four charged with collecting fraudulent insurance benefits

MARIETTA — Cobb County police arrested four area residents Monday on felony charges of defrauding the government of more than $60,000 in unemployment insurance benefits.

According to police, Laverne Baker, of Franklin Road, collected $4,290 in benefits for three months in 2009.

Laqueta Smith, of Franklin Road, collected $12,530 dating back to October 2012.

Paul Drayton, of Sewell Mill Road, collected $12,870 in benefits from June 2012.

Cynthia Winthrop, of Kilrush Drive in Mableton, collected $30,694 starting in May 2012.

Winthrop turned herself into police, and all four suspects were given $1,000 bonds.

STORY UPDATE — In the case of the State of Georgia v. Cynthia Winthrop, the Superior Court of Cobb County entered a Nolle Prosequi or “do not prosecute” order due to the defendant’s completion of the Pretrial Diversion Program. The order was filed March 20, 2015.
