Congratulations to Larry Hinds who was recently inducted into the Huntingdon College Athletic Hall of Fame. Hinds, an Alabama native and Acworth resident, attended the Methodist liberal arts college in Montgomery, Ala., on a basketball scholarship. He also played baseball and was president of his senior class.

Hinds served as principal of Wheeler High School, assistant superintendent of the Cobb County School District, and retired as a financial planner. Attending the ceremonies was his wife, Harriet, a retired Cobb County educator along with Huntingdon graduates Margaret and W.R. (Swampy) Johnson, retired Cobb County teachers, and other Kennesaw residents.

Worshippers will be seeing plaid on Sunday when Kirkwood Presbyterian Church has its fourth annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans service. The 10:30 a.m. service will feature bagpiper Kyle Peters along with a blessing of the tartans as Kirkwood celebrates the denomination’s Scottish heritage.

The service offers an opportunity for Presbyterians to celebrate their Scottish roots.

Those attending are encouraged to wear tartan attire or bring a swatch of the fabric to church. The tradition began in the 1700s after Bonnie Prince Charlie’s forces were defeated and the wearing of the tartan and the playing of the bagpipes were forbidden. During worship at that time, the tartans would be touched as the minister uttered a secret blessing.

After the service, there will be snacks and a brief bagpipe concert on the church lawn. Peters will also demonstrate the pipes and be available for photos.

The Rev. Catherine Renken is pastor of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church at 618 Acworth-Due West Road in west Cobb. For more information, visit or call the church at (770) 427-3545.
