Brandon Thornton, the vice president of Herschel Thornton Mortuary, confirmed Wednesday that Nix died Sunday of natural causes at his home in Stone Mountain, Ga. Services will be held Thursday at Destiny Metropolitan Worship Church in Atlanta.
Nix played for Tennessee from 1985-89 and led the SEC with 22.2 points per game in the 1987-88 season. He averaged 16.6 points and 8.4 rebounds in his college career. Nix, who was a 6-foot-7 forward, ranks eighth on the school's all-time list in career points (1,877) and is fourth in career blocks (142) and double-doubles (34).
The Charlotte Hornets drafted Nix in the second round in 1989. Nix played for the NBA's Indiana Pacers in 1989-90.
