ATLANTA — Newt Gingrich has tapped the former head of the Georgia ethics commission to serve as chief of staff for his White House campaign.

Patrick Millsaps will help coordinate campaign activity and oversee the day-to-day message.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said Saturday the move will supplement the existing staff as the campaign heads into critical elections on Super Tuesday.

Millsaps has been campaigning with the former House speaker since the Iowa caucuses as his deputy legal counsel.

The lawyer from Camilla stepped down last year as chairman of the Georgia ethics commission, where he helped lead a controversial effort to slash the salary of the executive secretary, Stacey Kalberman, effectively forcing her out.

Kalberman argued the move was retaliation for investigating Republican Gov. Nathan Deal. Millsaps denied that.
