A Mableton man who was a former Cobb school bus driver and supervisor as well as a church youth group volunteer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for producing and possessing child porn.

Stanley Keith Johnson, 57, was arrested in December and sentenced Monday by U.S. District Court Judge Steve Jones to serve 15 years in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to the charges in April.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said Johnson is accused of ordering 180 DVDs containing videos of nude boys between the ages of 8 and 14 in 2010 and 2011.

A federal search warrant executed at his house last December also revealed that Johnson was in possession of child porn on his home computer dating back to 2004.

Some images were of an 8-year-old child who Johnson met through his church, where he volunteered with the youth group and especially with young, fatherless boys.

After the search warrant was executed, the Cobb County School District fired Johnson from his position as a bus driver and supervisor. He had worked there since 1989.

During their investigation, Cobb Schools discovered that the computer they issued to Johnson contained downloaded images of children engaged in sexual acts, and he also had reportedly used it to check on the delivery status of the videos he had ordered.

“As a school bus driver and church youth group volunteer, this defendant had access to some of the most innocent and vulnerable members of society,” Yates said in a release Monday.

“He downloaded child pornography and took explicit photographs of a fatherless young boy he was trusted to mentor. Children are not sexual objects, and persons who see them that way can expect to be caught and go to prison.”

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Cobb County Police Department.

Smyrna man facing similar charges

Jerry Michael Lanier of Smyrna has been charged similarly to Johnson with one count each of receiving and possessing child porn.

The 51-year-old was working as a music instructor at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton when police raided his home in December 2011. A grand jury returned indictments on his charges Jan. 8.

Northern District of Georgia court spokesman Bob Page said Lanier’s jury trial has been delayed until Aug. 26. He will appear before Judge Orinda Evans.

Lanier is accused of ordering 19 DVDs between January 2010 and January 2011, and during a 2011 search of his home, investigators reported finding child porn videos on his computer.

If convicted, charges of receiving child porn carries a five- to 20-year prison sentence and the possession charge carries up to 10 years in prison. Lanier also faces fines of up to $250,000 and a supervised release period from five years to life.

You failed to mention how everyone in the court room agreed that this was the least aggressive child case that anyone has ever seen. What he did was completely wrong, but people that kill or actually touch or rape a child have gotten less time.
