The win sets Pebblebrook up with a quarterfinal game at Region 2AAAAAA champion Luella on Thursday. It will be the Falcons first quarterfinal appearance since 2007, when they made the school’s only other state quarterfinal trip.
“We are extremely excited to be where we are and heading into that game,” Pebblebrook coach George Washington said. “We’ve told our guys every day this season to put yourself in a position where you can’t be denied, whether it is boxing-out, rebounding or scoring. We did that tonight and if we do that again (against Luella), we will be alright.”
If Hudson starts like he did Tuesday, the Falcons will be alright, too.
Hudson made three 3s in the opening moments vaulting the Falcons to an early 16-5 lead. Chris Nelson picked up where Hudson left off in the second quarter, rolling up 10 points of his own before sending Pebblebrook into halftime with a 43-24 advantage.
“We knew (Brunswick) would get off the bus after a long, long ride up here and be a little flat so we tried to jump on them early,” Washington said. “(Hudson) really did a great job of getting us going off the start, and I keep telling people how good he is, but he really showed it in the first quarter tonight.”
The Falcons stretched their lead to 58-33 in the third quarter when Derrick Cook stole an inbound pass and converted a layup to cap an 11-0 scoring run.
Hudson finished the night with 19 points, Nelson scored 14, Demarre Alexander and Trhae Mitchell had nine for the Falcons.
Poor free throw shooting hampered Brunswick for much of the night, converting just 10-of-25 attempts from the line. The Pirates were led by Jabril Heck and Roger Davis with 13 points each.
