EMC hotline right step, but ‘trust’ issue lingers

I attended the Cobb EMC annual meeting on Saturday, Sept. 21. While I applaud many of the changes instituted by the new board of directors to protect the shareowners, the new board and management of the EMC must acknowledge that our skepticism of fiduciary policies is legitimate after the massive corruption uncovered in the past.

The announcement of a Whistleblower Hotline is a huge step forward in transparency and honesty. However, any former or current employee should be shielded from the board and certainly from the management, most of whom served Dwight Brown.

We are currently paying for a forensic audit and all calls to the Whistleblower Hotline should only go to a trusted member of the audit team. The number should be advertised so former employees, friends, neighbors or associates of Brown and the board that allowed such corruption can also contact the forensic auditors or the Cobb County District Attorney’s office.

We have not been able to receive our justly deserved capital credits for decades and we are unable to choose our electricity provider. The Whistleblower Hotline is a wonderful step forward, but what employee would trust such a call if it goes to the management team put in place by Brown or the board working with this team?

After the audit is completed, this Hotline can be monitored by the Cobb EMC Forum, an independent organization of EMC members to provide governance and oversight. I encourage all EMC owners/members to visit their website and sign up to be involved in the next Board elections.
