Approximately 98 percent of Cobb’s 6,678 students who took the 11th grade writing test met or exceeded the standards with an average score of 231. Of Marietta High School’s 374 students tested, 98 percent met or exceeded standards with an average score of 239.
The mean score for Georgia was 226 with 93 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards and in metro districts it was 229 with 96 percent meeting or exceeding. There were 98,754 students tested statewide and 36,561 in metro Atlanta.
Cobb’s mean score increased from by one point this year from 230 in 2011 to 231 in 2012 and while all 16 high schools in Cobb did have a pass rate of 90 percent or higher, only four did not have a score that remained the same or improved over 2011.
Those schools are Kennesaw Mountain, whose students’ scores went from 233 in 2011 to 232 in 2012; Kell, 232 to 231; Allatoona, 229 to 227; and Wheeler, 230 to 233.
The three schools with the highest scores were Pope, 243; Walton, 242; and Lassiter, 240. The schools with the lowest scores are Osborne, 217; South Cobb, 222; and McEachern, 225.
“The state writing test is an important gauge of our students’ communication skills and lets our teachers know which students may need additional support prior to graduation,” said Cobb Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa. “I’m proud to see that our district wide efforts to incorporate writing in all academic areas, including math and science, are resulting in improved performance and a higher passing rate on the GHSWT for Cobb County.”
For Marietta City, students at the high school improved their mean score by 13 points in 2012.
“This year, our eleventh graders significantly exceeded standards outpacing both Metro Atlanta and Georgia,” said Marietta Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck. “Our continued focus on developing writing skills necessary at every level of schooling and for effective business and social communication is clearly evidenced by our student’s performance on this year’s test.”
Eleventh graders must pass the test to earn a regular education diploma. A mean scaled score of 200 is defined as “meets expectations” and 250 as “exceeds expectations” with scale scores ranging from 100 to 350.
