MARIETTA — Cobb Sheriff’s officials apprehended an inmate within hours of his attempted escape Tuesday night.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Anthony L. Pierce, 20, of Powder Springs escaped on foot from the intake area as he was returning from a scheduled court appearance about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. He apparently accessed an outer security gate that was opened to allow a vehicle to exit.

Sheriff Neil Warren said Pierce was apprehended about 9 p.m. in the perimeter of the jail complex.

Pierce was arrested last Nov. 4 on misdemeanor charges of fighting in a public place and disrupting of public schools, Warren said. While in custody, Sheriff’s deputies took another warrant, on Nov. 19, for felony obstruction, simple battery and aggravated battery, Warren said, and Pierce now faces additional charges of escape.

Warren said the Cobb County Internal Affairs Unit will investigate to ensure that all policy and procedures were followed.

“I would like to thank the Georgia State Patrol, the Cobb County Police Department, the Marietta Police Department and the Atlanta Police Department for their assistance in locating the suspect,” Warren said in a statement. “Due to the rapid response of the Sheriff’s Office in coordination with these other agencies, the inmate was apprehended without incident and is back in custody at the Cobb County Jail.”

@ Cobb Native. I could almost hear God Bless Amercia in the background when you were railing @ Really. You sir need to get your cobb county head out of your Georgia rear end. @ Really was exactly correct I beleive. Cobb County barely can catch a cold. I personally got ripped off of over $2500 and dealing with the Cobb County Sheriffs dept was like dealing with a bunch of 3rd graders. Have you ever taken a look at the reports that they actually write, its embarrassing to say the least. EVer have the Cobb County boys pull you over for any kind of traffic violation. They like to sneak up the side of your vehicle like you just robbed a bank. What was the traffic violation you ask, i hadnt yet turned on my headlights in the dusk hours. Definitely a goofy Barney Fife. Im also in agreement with a the other resident that said law enforcement dont feter crime they just react to it. Also, that kid shouldnt have been in the jail since last November unless he's killed somebody, thats incredibly stupid and cost the tax payers money for what started out as a misdemenor. It appears the sheriff thinks that money is just not important when you are dealing with a criminal of this stature. What this tells you is how pathetic your sheriff really is and that he doesnt think. Im sure its all in the interest of our Safety and Security, thats always the old stand by for law enforcement reasoning.

I heard that this individual was originally arrested for fighting at school and when the police arrived he attacked them.

Uhhhh....just why is a 20 year old still in public high school if this was indeed the case?

one week before the furloughs started the jail had mandatory overtime and very limited vacation time allowed for all deputies because they were so short staffed. now, help me with the math - the sheriff went from making deputies work extra shifts to making deputies stay home because there is not enough money to pay them. if they were short handed before the furloughs started, how do you think the staff looks now that we are in the middle of the furloughs? "cobb county...expect a fulton county look alike".

your shot at really is REALLY silly. He just repeated EXACTLY what the CHIEF DEPUTY SHERIFF said live on Channel 2, go look it up when you get off your little soap box. Besides really is right, it does seem kind of subpar work for him to escape. I though jails were built to stop escapes. Why in heck do we have two county law enforcement agencies anyway. Its not cost effective and makes no sense. More waste

@ Really...You are repeating something you heard and then repeating it as if it were fact so what's that about? There are people in this county who could not say thanks to law enforcement no matter what the circumstances were. Have any of you ever seen that jail? It is heavily wooded on all sides with homes near by. So yeah it may take a few hours to locate one person( NOT four). But you anti law enforcement people should know you've probably had your own windows with a view there. You spend your time slamming CCP and CCSO at every opportunity, your just a bunch of gutless individuals hiding behind your library computers.

If he was in the perimeter of the jail complex it doesnt sound like he was trying really hard to escape does it? Since this kid is black and this is Cobb county you sort of have to wonder if the charges arent trumped up just a touch.

I'm surprised this story was "leaked" to the media at all; I mean, this IS NOT the greatest PR....and by the way....Sheriff's officers (and all the other law enforcement agencies called in to assist in this effort) SHOULD NOT get a lot of "praise"...they SIMPLY did their job! The Inmate's escape SHOULD NOT have happened in the first place. I keep saying that the Police DO NOT prevent crime; they simply respond to it. This is a case-in-point.

I wish I was not having to pay for his incarceration through property taxes which are now going up. When and if he gets out ban him from Cobb County.

The deputies were so alert that they let the inmate escape in the first place?

Great job. Yeah right!

Cobb Police are the alert ones!
Really?????

Ok if the deputies were so alert and great and all how did he escape the jail. I heard he just ran off while getting out of a car and no body even chased him. Whats that about? They caught a man chained wearing a red jump suit 100 yards from the jail 4 hours later. Sounds kinda crappy actually.

I guess Mr. Pierce has never learned that "When you find yourself in a hole...put down the shovel...

Before you trash whomever was transporting the inmate, know that the intake at ADC used to have double gates (one always closed while vehicles enter/exit) for vehicle access to avoid this exact type of issue. SPLOST paid for the new single gate setup... Just like every county department, things are running lean in terms of manpower too.

he was apprehended in the perimeter of the jail complex - and it took the authorities hours (plural) to find him? it's clear neither the perp nor the cops spend their spare time splitting atoms.

our tax dollars at work.

WOW!! So he went from two misdemeanor charges to having add on charges that now includes felonies. Hope his few hours of freedom was worth it. Good job deputies in apprehending him!!!
