The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded the Smyrna Police Department $8,000 to purchase the new Intoxilyzer 9000, which replaces the Intoxilyzer 5000. The state mandated all law enforcement agencies to transition to the 9000 model by 2015.

The Intoxilyzer 9000 is a breath alcohol testing instrument used by law enforcement agencies in Georgia to determine whether a person is driving under the influence of alcohol. The instrument measures a person’s breath alcohol content, expressed in grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath.

The Smyrna Police Department is committed to D.U.I. enforcement and this instrument will assist officers in their efforts. The Intoxilyzer 9000 will be installed inside the Smyrna detention center and will be operated by trained and certified officers.
