Set in 1942 in North Carolina, 18 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, “Sanders Family Christmas” is the sequel to “Smoke on the Mountain.” The nostalgic evening of blue grass and yuletide jollity at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church updates the audience on the Sanders family four years later.
The theme concerns a family member who is going to war.
“It’s a sweet story of sending one of your loved ones off to war and expecting good return. It’s a sweet story of family ties. You want them to come back safe and sound,” said Renee Davis, founding partner of PlayRight Productions that is producing the play.
“It’s also a real hilarious show with feel-good moments. You’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face because it’s a happy show,” said Davis, a Marietta native who graduated from Marietta High School in 1977. The mother of three grown sons, she is married to Ken Davis and has one grandson.
Davis, who earned a degree in business management with a minor in marketing from Kennesaw State University, started PlayRight Production five years ago with partners Barry Piacente and Doug Allen as a means for promoting wholesome professional-quality entertainment.
PlayRight has produced Sanders Family Christmas for five years but not in Marietta. Since the closing of Theatre in the Square, PlayRight brought the favorite back to the Strand.
“We do not have one particular theater that we work out of. We are exclusively a traveling production company. That’s what is unique about us,” Davis said.
Area locals in the show include Davis of Kennesaw and her son Jared Davis of Woodstock, Mike Shetler of Woodstock, Jen Carrozza of Woodstock, Tiffany Watson of Woodstock and Brandon Reeves of Marietta.
“’Sanders Family Christmas’ is a widely popular show. It’s shown to be a favorite in Marietta because it’s been done for many years,” Davis said.
In addition to “Sanders Family Christmas,” PlayRight produces other favorites such as “Smoke on the Mountain,” “Cotton Patch Gospel,” and “Forever Plaid” all over metro Atlanta and Georgia, generating 160 shows in five years.
