Soles4Souls is a global, non-profit organization that works to diminish poverty. Soles4Souls collects used and new shoes and other clothing items to ship to those in need both in the U.S. and overseas. The organization is active all over the United States in schools, churches and colleges. This year is Eastside Christian School’s seventh year participating in the charity, and the students involved have worked very hard to put this project together.
The eighth-grade students at Eastside Christian School are running this event for their charity project. The students, their families and members of the church and community donated countless pairs of shoes to give to the program. They have been accepting shoes of any sort — sandals, high heels, tennis shoes, boots — all are welcome. On Wednesday morning, the whole school will come together and gather around the shoes while a member of the pastoral staff at Eastside gives a dedication prayer and prays for the people who will be receiving the shoes. In the past, the eighth-graders have followed this event with packing up the shoes they have collected and riding to the Soles4Souls location in Wadley, Ala., to drop the shoes off so they can be shipped to their receivers.
“You never really know how big of a difference one pair of shoes could make for somebody who really needs them,” said Chele Manton, Eastside Christian School’s administrative assistant.
So far, the students have collected about 900 pairs of shoes, and they are still accepting any donations. In previous years, more than 1,000 pairs of shoes were collected and given to Soles4Souls, and the students are hoping to carry on the giving tradition by giving the charity as many pairs of shoes as possible. Anybody who would still like to donate shoes for the charity project can bring contributions to Eastside Christian School at 2450 Lower Roswell Road before the dedication service.
