Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 10th at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church of Marietta, followed by interment at West View Cemetery. Jan devoted her life to children. She was a dedicated mother, a youth theater advocate, and a special education elementary school teacher and tutor. Her teaching career spanned twenty years and four schools including Milton Elementary, West Clayton, Brumby Elementary, and The Howard School. She also was an active PTA member at Sedalia Park Elementary School where she orchestrated fall festivals, assemblies, and the first annual talent show. Jan maintained a lifelong friendship with her fellow teachers and they frequently gathered together as, “The Birthday Club”. In 1994, Jan started working with Curtain Call Youth Players, a non-profit theater organization in Cobb County. She began as a parent volunteer and proceeded to become a costume designer, producer, board president and finally their first ever general manager (2004 – 2010). Her commitment and creative work resulted in over 35 productions, and reached more than a thousand children over sixteen years.  Jan was also recognized by Cobb County as a “Volunteer of the Year” for her active dedication to Curtain Call. Jan served children in many ways as a member of First United Methodist Church. As co-chair of the Back to School Program, she helped provide over 1,000 backpacks a year to Cobb County students. She also served as co-chair for the “Christmas Angels” ministry helping fill more than 300 Christmas lists each year for a total of 900 packages. She also worked for MUST Ministries for 10 years in their clothing and food centers. Jan was very proud of her Finnish ancestry and traveled to Finland in 2006. She was a lover of cats, an avid fan of Beatles music and movie musicals, and loved throwing themed birthday parties, decorating for holidays and making costumes for special events. Through all of her service, hobbies and passions, she was always side by side with her husband and best friend, Gene.
