Rejoice with family and friends in the long life and loving memory of Edna Parker Chandler, who died on April 24, 2013, at the age of 94, in the loving care of the staff of the Preston Center at the Cypress on Hilton Head Island, SC. She leaves us to join hands with her beloved husband, Dean Chandler, and her seven siblings who predeceased her. The circle is now unbroken. Born in Cobb County, Georgia, on September 14, 1918, Edna grew up in a boisterous family of eight children and always a dog or two. Edna was the beloved wife and best friend of her one and only love, the late Lemuel Dean Chandler, whom she met in high school. Edna and Dean were perfect examples of the courageous “greatest generation,” willing to give all for all. As a newlywed, Edna endured the war induced separation from her husband without knowing if he would ever return. She faithfully wrote him daily letters, words of love, never fear. Upon his return, Edna did everything that was expected of a traditional housewife to the absolute best of her ability. She was active in her community, serving as a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer wherever needed. A true Southerner, Edna was as kind as she was independent, with a sharp wit and a firecracker soul, a fierce advocate of her loved ones, even if she herself reminded them of their “teeny tiny faults.” A single life produces much radiance when that person strives to do what is right. Edna did that. The world is better for her having lived. We, her family, are better for having known her. Edna is survived by her daughter, Joyce Chandler Burgess (Richard) of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; her beloved grandsons, Chandler Spears (Amy) of Santa Fe, N.M. and Shawn Spears (Kelli) of Newport Beach, Calif., along with her adored great-grandsons, Connor, Liam and Gavin, whose pictures were the last things she saw. In her later years, she was delighted to have more grandchildren and great-grandchildren to love, Darrah Thomas (David) and children Brett, Alexandra and Michae,l as well as Jeffrey Burgess (Mary Beth) and children Ryan and Kate. The color pink. From pink roses to pink lipstick to pink champagne, she loved it. In her honor, consider giving someone you love a pink rose. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edna’s name to the Hilton Head Humane Society, Post Office Box 21790, Hilton Head Island, SC. Private graveside services. An additional celebratory service in Albuquerque, N.M. during the summer. Online guestbook at:
