Bill Press wrong on newspapers’ readership drop

DEAR EDITOR:

Bill Press’ columns are always amusing as I look to see what detour from reality his progressive drug of choice has taken him. His recent lament over the red ink being spilled by the “great” newspapers of our day certainly missed the cause by a wide margin. According to Press, it’s the internet’s fault. To progressives, isn’t it always someone else’s fault?

As someone who long ago grew tired of the liberal, leftist ranting of the editors of another local newspaper I cancelled my subscription in favor of the MDJ and the Wall Street Journal. I am evidently not alone as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post are all bleeding red ink due to lost readership and revenues.

This is not, as Press believes, due to the internet. Rather, it is because those of us who are intellectually compliant enough to read a newspaper have seen that for some time now, our great newspapers have failed to report the news fairly and in an unbiased manner. We have voted with our wallets.

“Progressively” written and edited newspapers have lost their core readership for good. I guess liberals don’t read newspapers.

How is leaving one extreme point of view for another considered intellectually competent? Also, as a doctor, I would expect that you know making claims like this without any evidence is bad practice. I believe it has more to do with the way in which people are consuming news now - digitally.

This is probably the most ignorant letter ever written.
