MARIETTA — The 12th annual ‘Sleighbells on the Square’ 5K, 1K and Tot Trot on Dec. 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Marietta Square will try to ring up $25,000 for the Cobb Bar Association’s children’s emergency fund, said attorney Daniel K. McCall.

“It provides direct financial assistance to families with children,” McCall said. “Families under sudden financial stress are able to request financial help on a one-time basis, with the funds being paid directly to the landlord, utility company, car-repair service or grocery store.”

Not only is the event on the 400-race Run and See Georgia Grand Prix series, but McCall said participants can warm-up for a certain 10K in July.

“It’s a way to get a race under your belt and helps a runner get into the Peachtree Road Race,” he said.

Runners, walkers and trotters are encouraged to thread jingle bells through their shoelaces to add to the festive atmosphere, which event chair Laura Murphree said she hopes is even louder this year.

“Last year we had 1,000 runners,” said the Marietta resident and bar association treasurer. “Our stretch goal is double that, but, realistically, 1,500 would be a good number for us.”

Murphree said about 60 families, referred by Cobb School District social workers, benefit from the fund-raiser.

Race participants can register in person at Big Peach Running Co. stores through Wednesday; online through 9 p.m. Thursday on www.active.com; and in person on race day.

Registration fees are $25 in advance and $30 on race day. The course is from the Square to Kennestone Hospital and back.

Attractions at the event include musical entertainment, refreshments, a visit from Santa, free long-sleeved T-shirts and photos, and an award ceremony.
