James Harold Bottoms, 89, of Marietta, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2013. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Mayes Ward- Dobbins Chapel in Marietta with Rev. Dr. Barry St. Clair officiating. Burial will be at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. He was born at the family home in Talking Rock, Georgia on May 9, 1923 to his late parents, Homer and Laura Bottoms. After his father’s death in 1929, he moved with his mother and three siblings to Cobb County where he graduated from McEachern High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On July 27, 1945, he married his longtime sweetheart Mary Elizabeth McLemore. They were married for 62 years until she passed away in 2007. In 1947, he began a long career in the life insurance business and had a passion for helping people financially protect their loved ones. To his core, he was intent upon supporting the local church and the spiritual growth of our community. He was a longtime member, deacon, and treasurer of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in West Cobb and later served as a deacon for many years at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta. He was an ardent supporter of the Gideons International and raised funds to purchase Bibles which he helped place in area hotels, hospitals, schools as well as the Cobb County Jail. He is survived by his daughter Judy Marcopulos and her husband Tom; his son Gary and his wife Melissa; grandchildren David Bottoms and his wife Brittney, Jonathan Bottoms, Laura Bottoms Higginbotham and her husband Bryan, Stephen Marcopulos; Great Grandson Andrew Bottoms and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Gideons International and mailed to 1649 Desford Ct, SW, Marietta, GA 30064-4178. The family will receive friends before the service from 12 Noon-2:00 p.m. at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home & Crematory in Marietta.
