No frills, no funky flavors — just straightforward, 100 percent out-of-this-world doughnuts. It doesn’t get any better than at Dough in the Box, 3184 Austell Road, Marietta. The doughnuts at Dough in the Box are unforgettable.
“Our raised doughnuts are very unique. Our donuts are California-style donuts. They’re very light and fluffy. They have very little sugar in them. What makes them sweet is the glaze or the chocolate on top,” said Dannia Balestena, who owns the bakery with her husband, Jesus.
“You eat (the donuts) by themselves, it’s almost like a bread. That also helps the doughnut stay lighter. It doesn’t get hard because it has very little sugar in it,” she said.
Twenty-nine different flavored donuts are offered daily with specialty donuts offered at holidays. They also make a variety of cake doughnuts such as blueberry cake and sour cream old fashioned. “Our blueberry cake has become like a madness,” Balestena said.
The labor the Balestenas put into their doughnuts is the secret to their success. “We make everything here from scratch. We make everything fresh, all our own chocolate, glaze, donuts, croissants. Everything is made in-house. It has its process and everything is made fresh each day,” she said.
Jesus starts the process at 10 p.m. each evening and works through the night. “He makes them and I sell them. That’s how it works,” said Balestena, a trained architect. Jesus, a chef who attended culinary school in Milwaukee, Minn., and Dannia moved to Marietta from Tampa, Fla., where they owned a restaurant when she took an architectural job in Atlanta.
Three years ago, the Balestenas bought Dough in the Box. It celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year.
In addition to donuts, the bakery is known for their apple and blueberry fritters. On the weekend, try a glazed croissant — fried or baked — or a croissant stuffed and baked with ham and cheese or turkey and cheese.
“Then you can add other things to it like eggs,” Balestena said.
The donuts are undeniably great and the service is too. “A lot of our customers — we know them by name. We know what they want. That community sense we’ve built in our business has been one of our biggest attractions. We’ve always grown by word of mouth,” she said.
“We’re very proud of our doughnuts. We believe the quality of our doughnuts is very good,” Balestena said.
