In my 83 years, I have watched America go from a vibrant world leader to an emerging nation status administered by petty, third-rate politicians who couldn’t, or wouldn’t, read the very laws they have enacted. For politicians, enact a law no matter how foolish as long as it conforms to current politically correct culture.
The recent “pocket knife” episode at Allatoona High School is a good example. A “student” (possibly with a grudge) reports smoke rising from Andrew William’s car (maybe exhaust?) and reports to a campus officer. The anonymous tip student seemed to be an expert on marijuana detection. Was he also a suspect?
Does Assistant Principal Sam Sanford or Under Principal Scott Bursmith (under principal? Something new since I retired from education) examine the facts and William’s past record and reputation? Absolutely not! Twenty-four hours in jail, $5,000 bond, suspension, expulsion, a disciplinary tribunal to be on his police records forever and if found guilty, a $10,000 fine and 10 years in prison. How does this look to a college headhunter or potential employer?
What has happened to our legal system that has the power to destroy lives for insignificant wrongdoing? Hearsay evidence? Weapons charges? Where are the lawyers who work pro bono for serial killers but charge thousands of dollars for cases like these? Because of political correctness and zero tolerance of just about everything, America appears ridiculous due to some of the mandates it has been forced to follow.
Andrew possessed the knife since he had previously used the “weapon” to rescue himself and others from further accident injury. The very “weapon” that the AAA and law enforcement agencies suggested you carry in your car for safety.
Zero tolerance was enacted by fools who have forgotten how to use common sense. Let’s get back to being the Americans we were in the past. Hire lawyers who really want to defend you. Dump zero tolerance and political correctness. Replace this trash with common sense leaders, a bit of humor and school officials who can’t wait to get to the county office. Prosecute real criminals rather than those accused by anonymous tips.
Not everything requires a Supreme Court decision. Wake up, America!
