ACWORTH — A 50-year-old Acworth man was killed in a vehicle crash early Saturday on Mars Hill Road near Cobb Parkway.

James Underwood was stopped in his blue Ford F-150, which was pulling a cargo trailer, in the area between the northbound and southbound travel lanes, when he got out to put some signs along the road, said Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb Police.

At about 12:40 a.m., a silver Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Kenneth Chitwood of Acworth, heading southbound, swerved out of its lane and hit Underwood’s truck. One or both of the two vehicles then struck and killed Underwood, Bowman said.

Underwood was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Chitwood was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and first-degree homicide by vehicle, police reported.

Chitwood was taken, uninjured, to the county jail, Bowman said.
