DEAR EDITOR:

The Friends of the Strand (FOS) are no friends of mine. Their greed and poor business decisions have sent the wonderful Lyric Theater Company searching for a new venue.

Bob Ash, chairman of FOS, and his minions do not have to pay rent to the owners of the building (Goldstein) until 2015. Yet their “budget” of over a million dollars requires them to put the squeeze on the Lyric Company and drive them elsewhere. Perhaps the FOS budget should be published in the MDJ for all to see where the money goes.

As season ticket holders for several years, we have spent every theater night shopping and dining at the restaurants on the Square, but no more. The financial impact to the merchants on the Square from the loss of the Lyric will be felt in the coming months. What do Ash and the FOS plan in its place? Rock-n-roll revivals and third-rate comedy acts? We will not be attending any performances at the Strand ever again. Perhaps the “bad elements” that Mayor Tumlin fears will take the place of theater goers will pony up for tickets.
