Re: Front page story, Wednesday’s MDJ, “Marietta must provide benefits to same-sex couples.” Question by MDJ to Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin: Should legally married same sex couples employed by the city (Marietta) get pension benefits? Tumlin’s response: “I have no comment one way or the other about same-sex marriage. I’m not the moral police.”
Well Mr. Mayor, as mayor, it’s my belief that when you’re in charge, that you be in charge, and you darn well better have a position on an issue that involves you and your constituents. Voice your convictions one way or the other. His nickname, “Thunder” should instead be “Spineless.”
Morals aren’t the question here! Tumlin’s personal religious convictions are the question here, or they should be. I’ll shout from the highest platform for his freedom to exercise his right to voice his convictions, whatever they are.
My humble opinion? The federal government can take their mandate requiring Marietta to recognize same-sex couples as married partners when handing out retirement benefits and shove it! My opinion of same-sex partners or marriage is this: Genesis 2:24 and Leviticus 18:22. God said it, I believe it and his word cannot be interpreted any other way. Period.
