Regarding Tuesday’s Around Town column about the possible panther siting in Marietta: A friend recently told me he had seen a panther on Burnt Hickory Road.
A U.S. Park Ranger told me that panthers had been seen on Kennesaw Mountain.
Several years ago I saw a panther in South Carolina, not far from Highlands, N.C. Fortunately, it did not see or smell me. When I reported it to authorities, I was told I was mistaken — that panthers had been extinct in that area since 1800. But later I received an email from a U.S. Forest Service surveyor who said he believed my story and in fact had been attacked by what he believed was the same panther I saw.
You will find many reports of panthers in the area of South Carolina near Hilton Head. There are people in the Highlands area who say there are panthers in their region.
There are newspaper reports of sitings in the area where I saw the panther. There is an area up near Clayton called Panther Gap. There must be some panthers around despite what the experts say.
